So, an email came in last night from Angie who suggested that Banterist.com comments may not be working correctly because she'd commented recently and it didn't appear. And, she points out, no one else has commented. Since June. And she mentioned a previous incident on this same website where comments failed to appear.
Now, you'd think I might have noticed a dearth of commenting, but I didn't. Even when a friend pointed out the same thing a few weeks ago I shrugged it off because I figured people don't always comment on blogs anyway. Maybe they were busy Twittering or Napstering or whatever.
Angie's email prompted me to take a peek into the weblog's digital underbelly, and sure enough people have been commenting since June. Unfortunately all the comments were lumped in with comments from Russian pornographers, link spammers, counterfeit watch retailers, and herbal viagra peddlers. And they were being deleted every 14 days because of the absolutely staggering amount of comment spam this site gets. So all comments since June are gone, except for a few I was able to come across that were waiting to be deleted. Sifting through the junked comments is a laborious pain in the bum with this blog software, so I no doubt missed several.
So apologies. The settings have been tweaked in the hopes that comments can appear on the site, and not wind up on digital death row.
And I hope comment spammers get horrible cankers on their tongues and fingers.

Comments
A key to filtering out spam comments (aside from the broken english) is links to unrelated products.

And of course your comment went through with no problems. Cialis. Rolex.

You probably should have guessed something was wrong when no one commented on your Dear Leader post. In fact, maybe he's getting his revenge by sending lots of spam comments your way.

The comment blackout lasted so long that personally I thought you had just turned that feature off because you were tired of dealing with the spam. You seriously didn't notice the last comment was back in June? Some of your posts since then have practically begged for a comment.
Re comment spammers, I would wish for horrible cankers in other places too....... but let's not go there.

Call the grammar cop. "Most negligent website 2009" means the website itself has been negligent. Suggested edit: "Most neglected website 2009" or "Most negligent blogger 2009."

That's a relief! I couldn't figure out why you weren't getting any comments. You used to have some great commenters.

Here's a useless comment in celebration. Whoot.

I always find it strange that someone would think that I would be interested in their product because I received their unsolicited spam. If anything, I usually will go out of my way to avoid that product in the future. Is there a way to recycle the spam by sending it on to other spammers?

I think spammers are impervious to spam. The trouble here is I either have to open the floodgates and deal with deleting spam comments that come in on a regular basis (6 in the last 8 hours), or I have to filter and risk peoples' comments not getting through. Doesn't seem to be a happy medium!
I need me an expert.

That's good to hear. I just assumed nobody else read your blog. I kept expecting to just get a 404 one day.
I don't mean to knock the blog... it's damn funny... but people have terrible taste.
